Chapter 17

The following day as Harry was loading supplies on the pack horse for their trip to Cheyenne, Matt and Elizabeth Breen rode into the ranch. They had a pack horse with them that had more equipment than Harry thought a horse could carry.

“Where are you off to?” asked Harry

“We don’t really know,” said Matt. “We were hoping that you could give us a direction to take. We told the folks in town that we were taking a couple of weeks off to do some elk hunting over in Idaho. We started out that way, but changed our minds and headed here instead.”

“Glad you did,” said Harry. “Marigold said she knows a secluded place on the edge of their property where some hands used to spend part of the spring roundup looking for strays and doggies. It’s good bear hunting country, also. We’re on our way to Cheyenne to see the Marshal. We could take a little detour just to make sure you get there.”

“You don’t have to do that,” said Matt, “just point us in the right direction.”

“We don’t expect to get to Cheyenne until tomorrow,” said Harry. “Let’s go into the house for some coffee. Are you two hungry? I am, and I’m sure we can rustle up some lunch. Ming normally has some stew warming on the stove.”

Marigold was in the house and greeted them warmly. She set the table and began a conversation with Elizabeth as she served. They ate rather quickly and made sure the place was neat when they left.

Harry did tell Rebecca and Willard that he and Marigold were going to Cheyenne and would spend the night camping on the Indian reservation. They expected to make Cheyenne by dinner time the following day.

Rebecca said, “You won’t get to Cheyenne tomorrow or even the day after, it’s rough country to get through. Why don’t you take the stagecoach?”

“Because I wouldn’t have any flexibility, and they probably would ask me to ride shotgun. My shotgun days are over.”

Matt just laughed when Harry told him of the conversation with Rebecca.

“You have to be careful when you make those statements,” said Matt. “More often than not you will live to regret those remarks as you, once again, ride on top of the stagecoach holding a shotgun.”

“We better get going,” said Marigold. “We want be sure we’re at the cabin before dark, and it is a little ways away.”

Within ten minutes, the party left the ranch on their way toward Cheyenne. About two miles from the ranch, the party changed direction and proceeded to the old cabin at the end of the Hill property. It took a little longer to get there since Marigold got lost a couple of times. She hadn’t been there in a long time and forgot the landmarks that led to the cabin. In her defense, some of the landmarks were overgrown. Matt was using a compass and mapping the trail as they went. He’d be able to find his way back and eliminate some of the mistakes that Marigold made.
